Minister of Transport of the Republic of Kazakhstan Marat Karabayev reported at a Government meeting on the ongoing work on updating railway rolling stock and the fleet of wagons.

He said that currently the total number of the locomotive fleet is about 1.8 thousand units. The wear rate is 61%.

"In order to provide rolling stock and reduce the level of fleet wear, 185 locomotives were purchased this year. Next year, 187 units are planned to be purchased, and another 257 locomotives are expected to be delivered in the next three years. This will completely eliminate their deficit," Marat Karabayev said.

According to the Ministry of Transport, the total fleet of freight wagons is 139 thousand wagons.

There are more than 300 private operators on the market. Of these, Kazakhstan Temir Zholy accounts for 38 thousand wagons that are involved in socially significant transportation, that is, in the country's energy sector and the transportation of coal supplied to the population.

By 2026, the national operator additionally plans to supply 3 thousand gondola cars, of which 800 units have already been commissioned this year.

"Special attention is paid to the fleet of passenger cars. 118 new wagons were purchased last year, and 143 units this year. It is planned to purchase 226 railcars next year. By 2029, it is planned to purchase about 1,200 units of passenger cars. This will bring the fleet of passenger cars to over 3 thousand units and reduce the level of wear to 38%. To fulfill these tasks, it is proposed to create a Joint leasing company with the possibility of leasing passenger cars from domestic manufacturers with subsequent purchase," Marat Karabayev reported.
