Since 2016, a bicycle infrastructure development program has been implemented in the metropolis. In the same year, 270 bicycles and 50 stations were put into operation in a pilot mode. And in 2017, another 1,460 bicycles and 150 stations were added.
Previously, this project was "Velocity.kz "in 2020, this right was transferred to the Arman Aimak Public Foundation. From 2018 to 2020, the project was implemented with the financing of the Almaty City Sports Department. Subsequently, the bicycle rental project was transferred to the consideration of the city mobility Department.
In 2025, the Almaty Akimat plans to restart the bicycle rental project. This work is carried out by the municipal state enterprise "Almaty Parking". This institution is also engaged in a parking program in the metropolis.
According to the director of the organization, Vladimir Ni, the mayor's office focuses on making bike rental as comfortable as possible.
"Studying the city's features, we have taken into account past mistakes. Cycling has not been updated since 2016. But now times have changed. Previously, there were only mechanical bicycles, but now they are equipped with electric motors," said Vladimir Ni.
The project examined the experience of European countries, Russia, Japan, Korea and China.
"Although European bicycles are of good quality, their spare parts are very expensive, many of them are made in China. Modern exercise bikes are equipped with vandal-proof protection, which increases their service life. Their frames are sturdy, and the brakes and plastic batteries are highly durable. This will allow cycling bikes to be used in various climatic conditions," the specialist noted.
Project manager Samat Agabek noted that two different Bikes are currently being tested. One of them is designed for an Asian build, and the other is for a European build.
"For six months we have been testing the bikes and putting them into operation for the townspeople. We took them to the service centers for technical inspection and assessed how convenient and easy it is to repair, the ability to find parts. We are currently preparing a technical description for the competition," Samat Agabek said.
At the first stage, it is planned to purchase 2,000 bicycles. If these cars are in demand among Almaty residents, their number will be increased.
"We hope that bike bikes will become a part of urban life and complement the micromobile transport system. It also contributes to the environment," Vladimir Ni said.
Software improvements are also envisaged.
"A special application is being developed that will be on the balance sheet of the city. Bike bikes are equipped with GPS devices. This allows you to track their movement in real time and protect them from theft. The Mayor's Office is developing parking rules for micromobile vehicles. After the approval of these rules, we are planning a parking map," said the project manager.
Bike bikes are mostly located in the city center. There is no access to the mountainous areas. This restriction applies to all rental systems.
"About 1,500 people use bicycles in Almaty every day. We think that as soon as electric bicycles are put into operation, their popularity will increase. Because they are safe and convenient," concluded Samat Agabek.
