CADETS OF THE KAZAKHSTAN MARITIME ACADEMY OF KBTU CROSSED THE ATLANTIC OCEAN
Second-year cadets of the Kazakhstan Maritime Academy (KMA) of the Kazakh-British Technical University crossed the Atlantic Ocean on the Dutch sailboat Eendracht. This unique educational project became an important stage in their preparation, combining theory with practice and laying the foundation for a future naval career.
The sophomores of the Kazakhstan Maritime Academy (KMA) made a unique journey, crossing 3,191 nautical miles (about 5,910 km) across the Atlantic Ocean. Traveling aboard the Eendracht sailboat has become an important part of the educational process and became possible thanks to the partnership of KMA with the STC Group.
The route started on the island of Cape Verde, located off the west coast of Africa, and ended on the island of Curaçao in the Caribbean Sea. This experience became an important stage in the training of cadets, giving them a chance to apply theoretical knowledge in real conditions of ocean navigation.
During the trip, the cadet navigators actively participated in the watch, engaged in astronomical navigation and monitored the weather conditions. They used various navigation methods to accurately determine the route. The students also studied ocean flora and fauna, which led to numerous fascinating discoveries, including encounters with whales and dolphins.
Mechanical cadets worked in the engine room, performing tasks on welding, turning and studying the work of ship mechanisms. This experience was important for their professional growth, as it allowed them not only to study the design of ships, but also to master the work with modern equipment.
Ramil Biktashev, Dean of the Kazakhstan Maritime Academy:
"We are proud of our cadets who not only crossed the Atlantic Ocean, but also did it aboard the legendary sailboat Eendracht. This ship has become a real school of life for them and an important element of the team spirit. On board the sailboat, cadets learn to work as a single team, since they are the ones who control the movement of the vessel: they pull up the sails together, steer the ship on the right course, stand on night watches and support each other in any situation. This practice brings up in them not only professional skills, but also such important qualities as responsibility, discipline and mutual assistance. The training program of the Kazakhstan Maritime Academy of KBTU is aimed at developing skills that meet international standards. We are proud that our cadets receive unique educational and training opportunities, and we are confident that the experience gained will become the basis for their successful naval careers."
The journey of the second-year cadets of the KMA has become an important stage in their professional development. This unique educational project was successfully implemented thanks to the support of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Republic of Kazakhstan, the leadership of the Kazakh-British Technical University, mentors and partners, which allowed students to gain valuable practical experience and prepare for the requirements of the modern maritime industry.
