A hockey match was held in Astana over the weekend at the Barys Arena sports complex in memory of donor Maxim Voinyusha, who saved the lives of four patients.
On July 15, Maxim Voinyusha was urgently taken to the emergency department of the Turkestan Regional Clinical Hospital after a serious accident. The 18-year-old young man was driving a moped that collided with a car. Despite the efforts of doctors, his condition remained critical. A few days later, on July 23, Maxim's irreversible brain death was confirmed.
The day after the declaration of brain death, Maxim's relatives were interviewed and they decided to donate.
This event is not only a way to express gratitude and recognition to Maxim and his family, but also an important step in promoting posthumous organ donation in Kazakhstan.
Today, Kazakhstan has all the modern infrastructure for conducting high-tech organ transplantation operations. Currently, 7 transplant centers operate in the country, 40 donor hospitals, and 4 immunological typing laboratories have been organized. A network of national, regional and hospital coordinators has been established to ensure the coordination, identification and organization of the donation process.
However, despite the achieved potential of the service, today there are 4,117 people on the waiting list for donor organ transplantation, including 96 children.
Over the past 5 years, 1,005 organ transplantation operations have been performed in Kazakhstan, of which 92.1% were from related donors, and 7.9% were from deceased donors.
