The first two-day consultative seminar on regulating methane emissions, one of the most powerful greenhouse gases, is being held in the capital. The event, led by Zulfiya Suleymenova, Advisor to the President - Special Representative of the President of Kazakhstan for International Environmental Cooperation, was organized by the Ministry of Energy, the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources of Kazakhstan, and the International Energy Agency (IEA), Clean Action Task Force (CATF), and other partners. Representatives of the government, business, and international organizations participated.
Zulfiya Suleymenova, Advisor to the President - Special Representative of the President of Kazakhstan for International Environmental Cooperation: “Thanks to the ban on daily flaring of gas introduced in 2012, Kazakhstan has reduced gas flaring by more than 70%. Now we are ready to eliminate methane leaks and venting. This is not just ecology - this is sustainable development. We are losing a valuable resource that brings profit: electricity generation, reducing dependence on gas imports, and even increasing export potential.
Vice Minister of Energy Yerlan Akkenzhenov: "A lot of work has been done to improve and develop the legislative framework for the rational use of gas resources and reducing the environmental burden, which has allowed subsoil users to increase their responsibility in solving the problems of raw gas utilization.
The main result of the seminar is the development of a "Roadmap" for regulating methane emissions in the oil and gas and coal sectors. Kazakhstan, which joined the Global Methane Promise (GMP) in 2023, is ready to change the rules of the game: reduce emissions, attract investments, and increase the efficiency of the energy sector.
