For the first time, the International Classification of Diseases, 11th Revision (ICD-11), has been presented in the official language.
The World Health Organization (WHO) has officially presented an updated version of the International Classification of Diseases, 11th Revision (ICD-11), which includes a Kazakh version.
This is an important step in the development of the healthcare system of Kazakhstan, which will contribute to increasing the accuracy, detail and compatibility of medical data. Currently, 132 countries around the world are working on the implementation of ICD-11, with Kazakh becoming the 11th official language of the ICD-11. Previously, versions were published in English, Spanish, Russian, Uzbek and several other languages.
The ICD-11 is a global standard for classifying and coding diseases and health-related issues. The document contains approximately 55,000 unique codes for injuries, illnesses and causes of death. It will allow standardizing medical documentation, ensuring accurate disease reporting, and facilitating data exchange at the national and international levels.
“The Kazakh version of the ICD-11 will improve the process of analyzing statistics and morbidity, collecting and recording epidemiological information, contributing to improving primary health care, facilitating the qualitative regulation of prevention and treatment issues, and allowing for the uniform interpretation of medical data in the country and abroad,” noted Gulnar Sarsembayeva, Director of the Department for the Organization of Medical Care of the Ministry of Health.
After the approval of the ICD-11 by the World Health Assembly, in May 2019, WHO member states began a phased transition from the previous version (ICD-10). In Kazakhstan, the translation project into Kazakh was launched in 2023 at the initiative of the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Kazakhstan with the active participation of the Salidat Kairbekova National Scientific Center for Healthcare Development and medical universities. WHO experts provided technical support in this process.
“Including the Kazakh language in ICD-11 is an important step for Kazakhstan. This will not only simplify the work of medical workers, but also improve the quality of medical documentation and statistical data. I am confident that this will help analyze the health situation and strategically plan the development of the healthcare system,” noted Dr. Skender Syla, WHO Representative in the Republic of Kazakhstan.
