Vice Minister of Agriculture of the Republic of Kazakhstan Amangali Berdalin discussed cooperation in the veterinary sector with Emmanuel Subeyran, Director-General of the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE).
The main purpose of the meeting was to discuss the prospects for expanding cooperation in the veterinary sector, hold consultations on safe trade issues, and consider the possibilities of providing technical support from the OIE.
The parties discussed twinning projects aimed at obtaining the status of the Kazakh Scientific Research Veterinary Institute as a reference laboratory of the OIE for the diagnosis of bovine leukemia, as well as cooperation with the Harbin Veterinary Research Institute of China and S. The meeting discussed the progress of the twinning project on the establishment of a WHO reference laboratory for Central Asian countries on equine infectious anemia between the Seifullin Kazakh Agrotechnical Research University.
Emmanuel Subeyran noted the positive dynamics of the progress of the projects and announced that the decision of the WHO Scientific Commission on the first project will be published in September of this year.
The Vice Minister announced Kazakhstan's initiative to establish an international quarantine center in the Mangystau region for the export of animals in accordance with international standards. During the discussion, the WHO was asked for technical recommendations on organizing such a platform, safe export mechanisms through Kazakhstan, and regional risk management recommendations.
The Director General of the WHO expressed his readiness to consider this issue at an expert level and make appropriate recommendations.
In addition, the meeting discussed the issues of restoring the foot-and-mouth disease status of the northwestern and central regions of Kazakhstan, maintaining the current status of the southeastern regions, and conducting training seminars for Kazakhstani veterinarians.
It should be noted that Kazakhstan currently has official WHO statuses for foot-and-mouth disease (southeastern regions), African horse sickness, and classical swine fever. The Ministry is working to restore favorable statuses in the northwestern regions.
