On March 3, 2025, a delegation of the Republic of Kazakhstan, led by the Vice Minister of Energy A.Zh. Zhamauov, arrived in the United Kingdom on an official visit to study best practices in the field of industrial decarbonization. This visit demonstrates Kazakhstan's commitment to achieving carbon neutrality by 2060 and implementing strategic objectives for the transition to a low-carbon economy.
On the first day of the visit, a constructive meeting was held with representatives of the Ministry of Energy, the Ministry of Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy, as well as the UK Ministry of Environment, Food and Agriculture. The parties discussed a wide range of issues, including state policy in the field of low-carbon development, incentives for industrial decarbonization, financial mechanisms for supporting "green" projects, and prospects for mutually beneficial cooperation in the field of sustainable energy. Particular attention was paid to the exchange of experience in the field of developing and implementing a regulatory framework for regulating greenhouse gas emissions.
“Kazakhstan views decarbonization not only as an environmental imperative, but also as an opportunity to modernize the economy and create a new high-tech industry. We aim to create a full-fledged industry based on advanced technologies, and we are very interested in the experience of the UK in this area,” noted the Vice Minister of Energy of the Republic of Kazakhstan A.Zh. Zhamauov.
As part of the extensive program of the visit, the delegation will visit industrial sites in the cities of Kent and Cardiff, where they will get acquainted with practical examples of introducing innovative technologies to reduce the carbon footprint in various industrial sectors, including metallurgy, cement production and petrochemicals. The Kazakh side is interested in studying specific cases, successful business models and mechanisms of public-private partnership that can be adapted and used in the conditions of the national economy. Carbon capture and storage (CCUS) technologies, as well as projects for the production and use of "green" hydrogen, are of particular interest.
This visit is an important step in implementing Kazakhstan's long-term strategy for the transition to carbon-neutral development in accordance with Kazakhstan's commitments under the Paris Agreement and the National Strategy for Achieving Carbon Neutrality by 2060. The results of the visit will be used to improve the national decarbonization policy and develop new measures to support the introduction of clean technologies in industry.
