On Thursday, March 13, at a meeting of the Republican Headquarters for Coordination of Anti-Flood Measures, chaired by the Prime Minister of the Republic of Kazakhstan Olzhas Bektenov, the Governor of the West Kazakhstan Region Nariman Toregaliyuly reported on the measures being taken to prevent possible floods.
According to Kazhydromet, the water level in the rivers of the region is expected to be below the dangerous level. However, the regional authorities have taken additional measures to monitor the situation. In addition, 7 new monitoring stations have been installed in addition to 22 hydro stations in the region. In addition, three automated monitoring systems will be launched on the Zhaiyk, Shagan and Derkol rivers, which will be fully operational by the end of March. These systems allow for rapid monitoring of water levels and rapid response to potential threats.
The regional governor noted that the region's civil defense system has been put on high alert.
"81 protective dams with a length of 143 kilometers have been built, 9 kilometers of drainage channels, 93 kilometers of ditches have been dug, 582 meters of water supply pipelines have been installed in settlements, and 74 kilometers of main canals have been cleaned. All reservoirs in the region are operating in transit mode," Nariman Toregaliyuly reported.
A significant stock of material and technical resources has been created in the region to prevent possible emergencies. 1.8 thousand special equipment, 123 floating devices, 455 motor pumps and more than 4 thousand employees have been mobilized around the clock. In addition, more than 12 thousand tons of inert material, 413 thousand bags, and 423 tons of fuel and lubricants have been prepared. More than 95 thousand sandbags have been prepared.
In addition, 317 temporary evacuation stations have been prepared, designed to accommodate 32 thousand people. Also, 195 special places have been designated for the relocation of farm animals to safe areas.
It should be noted that the regional flood control headquarters began its work on March 10. Currently, work is underway to eliminate the consequences of the winter season and prepare for floods. 916 thousand cubic meters of snow have been removed, 49.3 thousand cubic meters of melt water have been pumped out, 27 kilometers of drainage channels, 62 kilometers of ditches and more than 1,200 water pipes have been cleaned. In addition, 1.5 thousand square meters of land have been blackened.
Flood preparation work is under the personal control of the regional akim.
