The author of the famous Words
The famous work of Abay was the prose poem "Kara Soz", or
"Words of Edification", consisting of 45 short parables or philosophical treatises.
Abay Kunanbayev's works have been translated into many languages. "Words of edification" is to the reader, as if a dialogue, a kind of fruit "you and a noticeable bitter heart", and philosophy of life of the individual on the background of the fate of the people.
"I have lived well or badly, and covered a lot in the fight and quarrels, courts, disputes, sufferings, and anxieties reached a ripe old age, exhausted, sated all found the frailty and futility of their acts, convinced of the humiliation of his being. What do I do now, how do I live the rest of my life? It is puzzling that I do not find an answer to my question.
Rule the people? No, the people are unmanageable. Let this burden be borne by the one who wishes to find an incurable disease, or by the ardent youth with an unfettered heart. And may Allah save me from an unbearable burden. Should the herds be multiplied? No, it's not worth it. Let the children raise cattle if they need to. I will not darken the remainder of my days by tending cattle to the delight of crooks, thieves, and beggars. To do science? How do you understand science when you don't have anyone to talk to? To whom should I pass on my accumulated knowledge, or ask someone what I don't know? What is the use of sitting in a deserted steppe, spread out canvases, with a yard in your hand? Knowledge turns into bitterness, bringing premature old age, when there is no person to share joy and sadness with. Can you devote yourself to worship? I'm afraid it won't work. This activity requires complete peace and tranquility. I don't know peace in my soul or in my life, what piety there is among these people, in this land!
To raise children? And I can't do that. I would have raised them, but I don't know how or what to teach them. What business, for what purpose, to teach them, for what people to educate them? How to instruct, where to direct, when I do not see where children could apply their knowledge? And here I found no use for myself. Finally I decided that paper and ink would be my comfort from now on, and I would write down my thoughts. If someone finds the word they need in them, let them rewrite it or remember it. If my words are unnecessary to people, they will remain with me. I have no other worries now."
These edifications revealed the problems of history, pedagogy, and morality. The poet protested against violence by parents and mullahs, who kill the love of science in children. Abay believed that the learning process should bring the joy of learning. The study of science should contribute to the correct knowledge of the material world, it should lead a person to perfection.
The poet and the thinker warned the youth from the frivolous attitude toward science. "To know Russian means to open your eyes to the world," Abay says. "Knowledge of a foreign language and culture makes a person equal with this people, he feels at ease, and if the cares and struggles of this people are to his heart, then he can never stay away."
