Kazakhstan Reaffirms Commitment to the Peaceful and Sustainable Use of Outer Space
30.06.2025 15:41:58 154Vienna, June 27, 2025 – The delegation of Kazakhstan, including representatives from the Ionosphere Institute of the Aerospace Committee of the Ministry of Digital Development, Innovations, and Aerospace Industry of the Republic of Kazakhstan and the Permanent Mission of Kazakhstan to the International Organizations in Vienna, is participating in the 68th session of the United Nations Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (COPUOS).
In its national statements, the Kazakhstan delegation reaffirmed its commitment to the UN Space 2030 Agenda, as well as to the peaceful and sustainable use of outer space. The delegation informed COPUOS member states about Kazakhstan's significant experience in integrating space technologies into key sectors of the national economy, environmental monitoring, and natural resource management.
Additionally, Kazakhstan continues to strengthen its cooperation with the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA) through various initiatives, including the UN-SPIDER program, which aims to ensure access to space technologies for developing countries to effectively manage disaster risks and mitigate their consequences.
During the 62nd session of the COPUOS Scientific and Technical Subcommittee, held in February 2025, Kazakhstan proposed the establishment of the Regional Space Situational Awareness Center in Almaty, affiliated with the United Nations. This initiative was included in the final document of the STSC session, and active discussions on its implementation are currently ongoing.
The annual COPUOS session will continue until 2 July 2025. Strategic decisions are expected to be made during the session, focusing on the sustainable and responsible use of outer space, the development of mechanisms to prevent the creation and actively reduce space debris, as well as strengthening international cooperation in the exploration of the Moon and other celestial bodies.
