The Kazakh diplomat also spoke about the consequences of prolonged nuclear tests at the Semipalatinsk nuclear test site and the measures of the Kazakh government to rehabilitate them for the benefit of the population living in the nuclear contamination zone. The Embassy simultaneously held a presentation of the chronology of Kazakhstan's nuclear initiatives, including the creation of a nuclear-free zone in Central Asia. At the same time, the importance of creating an International Low Enriched Uranium Bank in Kazakhstan as a new approach to strengthening the non-proliferation regime was also noted.
Honorary President of the Planetary Union of Brazil, President of the «Kazakhstan-Brazil» Friendship Forum, former Senator Ulisses Riedel emphasized the importance of observing the global ban on nuclear tests and noted the historical role of Kazakhstan in this area. During the conference, the participants exchanged expert opinions on the compatibility and complementarity of the main international legal instruments in the field of nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation, such as the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons, the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons, the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty, the Treaty on a Nuclear-Weapon-Free Zone in Central Asia, and others.
Reference: in 2009, the UN General Assembly resolution declared August 29 the International Day against Nuclear Tests. The Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW) was adopted in July 2017 and entered into force on January 22, 2021 (upon reaching 50 ratifications). For the first time in history, the Treaty established an international legal ban on the possession of nuclear weapons - the last legally unrestricted type of WMD. The TPNW has 68 states parties and 91 signatory states. Kazakhstan actively participated in the negotiation process on the TPNW, signed it on March 2, 2018, and submitted the instrument of ratification on August 29, 2019.
