Man Gets Two Years of Restricted Freedom After Attacking Police Officer
An East Kazakhstan man who attacked a police officer has been sentenced to two years of restricted freedom instead of a prison term. He will now be supervised by a probation service.
The incident occurred during a routine document check. Police officers stopped a car with two men inside. One of the men, who was under the influence of drugs, refused to show his documents and became aggressive.
The situation quickly escalated into a conflict. The man inflicted bodily harm on one of the officers and then began throwing stones, aiming at the officer's head and hands.
The court found the man guilty of two charges: drug use and violence against a government official. However, the court took the circumstances of the case into account and imposed a sentence that does not involve imprisonment.
The offender is now required to regularly check in with the probation service. His rights and responsibilities, including a ban on drug use and committing offenses, were explained to him. Any violation of these rules could result in his restricted freedom being replaced with a real prison sentence.
"Our goal is not to lock a person up but to help them become a useful member of society. We will monitor his every move to prevent recidivism. This is a clear example that the justice system can not only punish but also give a second chance," commented Gulmira Bolekbayeva, head of the probation service department for the Shemonaikha district in the Department of the Penitentiary System for the East Kazakhstan region.
