Due to snowfall expected in the coming days and a drop in temperatures, Almaty’s municipal services have switched to an enhanced operating mode. This was reported by representatives of the city’s Department for the Development of коммунal Infrastructure and the Housing Inspectorate.
According to Kazhydromet, snowfall in Almaty that began on the night of January 15–16 will continue until the evening of January 17. On January 16, nighttime and daytime air temperatures will be around –5 to –7°C. On January 17, nighttime temperatures will drop to –11 to –13°C, with daytime temperatures remaining at approximately –7 to –9°C.
In this regard, starting from January 15, all municipal services in the city have been put on an enhanced work regime. Around-the-clock duty shifts have been organized at production bases for drivers, machine operators, and road maintenance workers.
To prevent icy conditions, 210 sand-spreading vehicles will be placed on standby in areas where special equipment is deployed before snowfall. In addition, liquid de-icing reagents will be applied in advance on major arterial roads.
A total of 1,030 units of special equipment will be operating around the clock, along with 200 additional units from private organizations and 2,710 road maintenance workers. For cleaning courtyard areas, 1,790 workers and 256 units of special equipment will be involved.
Moreover, 75 rapid-response teams will continuously monitor road conditions in hazardous sections, on slopes and elevations, as well as on access roads to interchanges, in order to prevent and promptly eliminate icy conditions.
In addition, Almaty’s Rescue Service will organize round-the-clock duty, deploying 16 units of special equipment and 50 personnel. The city’s Department for Emergency Situations will also be on duty with 53 units of special equipment and 244 staff members.
District akimats will introduce round-the-clock duty to monitor the execution of ongoing works.
Due to the sharp drop in temperatures, the formation of icy conditions, compaction of snow on roads, and icing on sidewalks, residents are urged to observe safety precautions. Drivers are advised to reduce speed, increase the distance between vehicles, and avoid sudden maneuvers.
Drivers with little experience are recommended to temporarily refrain from using private vehicles and to use public transport instead. Pedestrians are advised to exercise caution on sidewalks and near multi-story buildings, as there is a risk of snow falling from roofs.
