As part of the implementation of the “Law and Order” concept, the Department of criminally-executive system in the North Kazakhstan region, in cooperation with Manash Kozybayev North Kazakhstan University and the Regional Prosecutor’s Office, organized a preventive event in the format of a teleconference between university students and convicted persons serving sentences in penitentiary institutions.
About 500 students took part in the event. The main objective of the meeting was to prevent offenses and crimes among young people, to foster legal awareness, and to develop a conscious and responsible attitude toward one’s own life and future.
The teleconference was attended by Acting Head of the Department, Colonel of Justice Kanat Suleimenov, Head of the 2nd Department of the Regional Prosecutor’s Office, Justice Counselor Almas Zhalmagambetov, and Member of the Board for Social and Cultural Development of Manash Kozybayev North Kazakhstan University, Adilkhan Tolepbergen.
In his welcoming remarks, Kanat Yelyubayev noted that, according to observations by the penitentiary system staff, the majority of those convicted for drug trafficking through so-called “stash” distribution are young people aged 18 to 25. Among them are many students and graduates of higher and secondary educational institutions, including high-achieving students.
He emphasized the importance of holding such preventive events aimed at deterring illegal activities among young people, stressing in particular that the law applies equally to everyone.
During the meeting, students were given a unique opportunity to communicate directly via teleconference with convicted individuals serving sentences for crimes related to the placement and distribution of narcotic substances. Earlier, a group of university students had visited Institution № 50, after which participants were shown a short video about the students’ visit to the facility.
During the event, three convicted individuals addressed the students, sharing their life stories and speaking about the consequences of the crimes they had committed. The mother of one formerly convicted individual who has already been released also spoke, sharing her personal story and describing the severe impact of what had happened on the entire family.
At the conclusion of the meeting, students asked the convicted individuals questions of interest and received candid and informative answers. The event served as a clear example of the importance of preventive efforts and direct dialogue with young people in fostering law-abiding behavior.
