The Trade Policy Review of The Gambia is held under the Chairmanship of Kazakhstan at the WTO

Geneva, 6 February 2026 – On 4 and 6 February, the Trade Policy Review of The Gambia was held at the headquarters of the World Trade Organization under the chairmanship of the Permanent Representative of the Republic of Kazakhstan to the WTO, Chair of the Trade Policy Review Body, Kairat Torebayev.
The Gambian delegation was headed by the Minister of Trade, Industry, Regional Integration and Employment, Mr. Mod K. Ceesay. During the meetings, The Gambia presented information on the country’s socio-economic development, economic recovery following the COVID-19 pandemic, measures to ensure macroeconomic stability, as well as ongoing reforms in trade and investment policy, digital transformation, and the modernization of trade procedures.
The meetings highlighted the development of the services sector, in particular tourism, which accounts for a significant share of GDP and employment, as well as the strengthening of export potential in agriculture, fisheries, and agro-processing. The Gambia also informed WTO Members about the implementation of the National Digital Economy Plan, the e-commerce strategy, trade facilitation measures, and the introduction of the ASYCUDA World system and the National Single Window.
WTO Members highly appreciated The Gambia’s commitment to the multilateral trading system, its active role in the work of WTO bodies and in discussions on reform, including trade facilitation, investment facilitation, e-commerce, MSME development, and sustainable management of fisheries resources. The important role of The Gambia as Coordinator of the WTO Least Developed Countries (LDC) Group was also noted.
Chair Kairat Torebayev thanked the delegation of The Gambia and WTO Members for the constructive and substantive exchange of views and emphasized that the Trade Policy Review is an important mechanism for enhancing transparency, strengthening trust, and encouraging reforms aimed at sustainable economic growth and development.
The next Review under the Chairmanship of Kazakhstan will be held on 11 and 13 February 2026 and will be dedicated to the Trade Policy Review of Papua New Guinea.
