On 5 February 2026, at approximately 8:30 p.m., a fire broke out in an apartment on the second floor of a multi-storey residential building No. 20 in the Zarechny microdistrict of the city of Alatau.

At that time, servicemen of Military Unit 3660 of the National Guard of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Republic of Kazakhstan — Senior Lieutenant Yerbol Arystanov, Sergeant Bauyrzhan Zhaidarin, and Corporal Nurzhan Bekbolatov — were returning home after duty. They noticed dense smoke coming from an apartment and immediately notified emergency services 101 and 103, after which they began evacuating residents.

The servicemen responded promptly and evacuated about 20 children, several women, and persons with disabilities from the building to a safe area. The situation on the fifth floor was particularly dangerous. Three underage children were inside an apartment that was locked from the outside. Despite the threat of heavy smoke and carbon monoxide poisoning, the guardsmen climbed to the upper floor to ensure the inflow of fresh air, forced the door open, and rescued the children.

— Seeing flames and thick black smoke pouring out of the window of the apartment on the second floor, our primary concern was to help the residents. There were many young children and elderly people among them. The stairwell was filled with heavy smoke; it was difficult for them to breathe and orient themselves, so they were unable to leave the building on their own, — Senior Lieutenant Yerbol Arystanov said.

Fire service personnel who arrived at the scene immediately began firefighting operations. Through the efforts of the regional Emergency Situations Department, the fire was fully localized. The circumstances of the incident are being investigated.

Thanks to the prompt and courageous actions of the National Guard servicemen, many lives were saved. Their professional training and civic responsibility are a vivid example of the high spirit and valor inherent in the law-enforcement forces.
