Kazakhstan and Spain Strengthen Strategic Engagement in Sustainable Development

Madrid, March 2, 2026 – The Ambassador of Kazakhstan to Spain, Danat Mussayev, held a meeting with the Spanish Secretary of State for the Environment, Hugo Morán, during which the parties discussed prospects for deepening bilateral cooperation in the fields of water resources, environmental protection, and sustainable development.
During the meeting, the Ambassador presented Kazakhstan’s practical experience in water diplomacy and environmental rehabilitation. Particular attention was given to the achievements in restoring the Northern Aral Sea, including rising water levels, reduced salinity, and the revival of fisheries — positive developments made possible through the implementation of comprehensive environmental projects.
The active role of Kazakhstan in promoting international scientific cooperation on the Caspian Sea was also emphasized, including the establishment of joint monitoring and response mechanisms to address declining water levels.
The Kazakh side also informed about the preparations for the Regional Environmental Forum under the auspices of the United Nations, which will take place on April 22–24, 2026, in Astana.
Following the meeting, the Ambassador invited the Spanish side to participate in the upcoming forum in Astana.
