Addis Ababa, March 28, 2026 – The Embassy of the Republic of Kazakhstan in Ethiopia hosted a solemn celebration of Nauryz, bringing together representatives of the Ethiopian diplomatic corps, the "Club of Friends of Kazakhstan in Ethiopia," public associations, and the business community.

Opening the event, the Ambassador of the Republic of Kazakhstan to Ethiopia and Permanent Representative of Kazakhstan to the African Union, Zhalgas Adilbayev, extended warm congratulations to all participants and spoke about the new format of Nauryz celebrations in Kazakhstan.

"In Kazakhstan, Nauryz is celebrated as the traditional New Year. Starting from 2024, at the proposal of President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, the Nauryz holiday in Kazakhstan is celebrated over 10 days - from March 14 to 23. This decade has been named 'Nauryznama.' Each day carries its own unique name and significance, reflecting the profound essence of the Nauryz holiday," the Ambassador noted.

According to him, March 21 is recognized annually worldwide as International Nauryz Day. This ancient holiday marks the arrival of spring and the renewal of nature. It is celebrated across many regions of the world, including the Balkans, the Caucasus, Central Asia, the Middle East, Iran, Pakistan, India, and beyond. Nauryz promotes the values of peace, family, reconciliation, and good neighborliness, contributing to cultural diversity and friendship among nations.

The Kazakhstani diplomat also observed that this year, the Christian fast of Hudade Tsome coincided with the Nauryz celebrations. He reminded the guests of the cultural significance of the "Nauryz" holiday, which led to its inclusion in the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

During the event, participants enjoyed the sounds of traditional Kazakh kuis such as "Saryarka," "Adai," "Konilashar," and "Balbyrauyn." They also admired the beauty of traditional Kazakh attire and sampled authentic Kazakh dishes, including Nauryz-kozhe, beshbarmak, kuyrdak, and baursaks. Additionally, a film showcasing the celebration of Nauryz in Kazakhstan was presented to the guests.

Overall, the attendees highlighted the universal nature of the values embodied by Nauryz and congratulated one another on this festival of Spring, peace, harmony, and renewal. They expressed their wishes for unity, peace, kindness, and prosperity for the people of Kazakhstan.
