Budapest, May 12, 2026 – With the support of the Embassy of the Republic of Kazakhstan in Hungary, an exhibition and masterclass dedicated to the traditions of Kazakh decorative and applied arts and wool processing was held in Budapest.
The event became an important part of the cultural dialogue aimed at strengthening cultural and humanitarian cooperation between Kazakhstan and Hungary, as well as deepening friendly ties between the peoples of the two countries.
The event was attended by spouses of heads of diplomatic missions accredited in Hungary, as well as representatives of business and public circles.
In his welcoming remarks, the Ambassador of Kazakhstan to Hungary, Abzal Saparbekuly, noted that Kazakhstan and Hungary are united by deep historical and cultural ties rooted in the heritage of the Great Steppe. He also emphasized the special role of cultural cooperation in the development of bilateral relations.
As part of the program, guests became acquainted with the traditions of wool processing, the art of felt-making, the distinctive features of Kazakh ornaments, and traditional handicrafts.
Artisans from the “Urshyk” Association presented felt and textile products, elements of ethno-design, as well as traditional Kazakh jewelry.
Guests not only observed the process of creating the handicrafts but also had the opportunity to participate directly in the masterclasses.
The works were presented by ethno-designer and founder of the Republican Public Association of Artisans “Urshyk” Bibigul Kardenova, textile art master Svetlana Makhanzhanova, artisan Zaure Idrissova, decorative and applied arts master Anar Toremuratova, as well as participant of cultural initiatives Saltanat Yeleusinova.
During the event, the artisans placed special emphasis on the philosophy of national craftsmanship, which reflects harmony between humans and nature, respect for the environment, and the continuity of cultural traditions.
In addition, guests had the opportunity to taste traditional Kazakh cuisine and enjoy the captivating sounds of the Kazakh dombra.
The event became an important cultural platform for promoting Kazakhstan’s rich cultural heritage in Hungary and attracted significant interest from participants.
Furthermore, on May 8–9, 2026, Kazakh artisans participated in the VIII Hungarian Wool Festival held in the city of Hortobágy. Organized by the Directorate of Hortobágy National Park, the festival was held for the first time on the territory of a UNESCO World Heritage Site and brought together artisans, wool producers, and craftsmen from different regions of Hungary.
As part of the festival, Kazakh artisans showcased traditional Kazakh felt and textile art, attracting considerable interest from the Hungarian public. Guests were introduced to the full wool-processing cycle — from shearing and dyeing to spinning, weaving, and felt-making.
Background: The Republican Public Association of Artisans “Urshyk” is engaged in the revival, preservation, and development of traditional Kazakh decorative and applied arts, including felt art, jewelry craftsmanship, and the traditions of creating ethnic clothing.
