Ljubljana, 16 June 2026 – A series of cultural events featuring the Kazakh ethno-folklore and dance ensembles Qagan and Yassy took place in the Slovenian capital. The events were organized by the Embassy of the Republic of Kazakhstan in Slovenia with the support of the Akimat of Shymkent and Slovenian partners.
One of the highlights of the early summer cultural season was an impromptu concert held in Ljubljana’s central square, marking the first performance by artistic groups from Kazakhstan since the opening of the Embassy of the Republic of Kazakhstan in Slovenia. The melodic sounds of the dombra, qobyz, dauylpaz and other traditional instruments, together with authentic musical compositions and colorful national costumes, offered residents and visitors a unique opportunity to experience the rich cultural heritage of the Kazakh people. The concert attracted significant interest from the Slovenian public, international tourists, and members of the Kazakh diaspora, becoming for many their first introduction to Kazakhstan’s musical traditions and culture.
On the same day, the historic architectural complex Križanke hosted the traditional international charity event Midsummer Night (Kresna noč), organized by Lions Club Ljubljana Iliria with the support of the Embassy of Kazakhstan in Slovenia. For the first time in the more than 25-year history of the event, Kazakhstan participated as the official cultural partner.
The event brought together more than 300 guests, including Dr. Aleš Musar, spouse of the President of Slovenia, members of the diplomatic corps, representatives of government and public institutions, business, financial and industrial circles, cultural figures, representatives of the Kazakh diaspora, as well as residents and visitors of Ljubljana. Speaking on behalf of the Slovenian Head of State, Dr. Musar expressed satisfaction with the high level of relations between Slovenia and Kazakhstan and highlighted the positive momentum in bilateral cooperation in the fields of economy, trade, education, and tourism.
The central element of the cultural program was the performance of the ensembles Qagan and Yassy, which presented Kazakhstan’s unique musical heritage, blending traditional Kazakh music with ancient Turkic motifs. Guests also had the opportunity to visit a photo exhibition showcasing Kazakhstan’s natural diversity, historical and cultural heritage, and contemporary achievements.
Particular interest was generated by a video presentation highlighting modern Kazakhstan’s tourism potential, national cuisine, and the richness and diversity of its culture and traditions.
A symbolic moment of the evening was the recognition of renowned Slovenian entrepreneur and philanthropist Janez Škrabec, Honorary Adviser to the Ambassador of Kazakhstan in Slovenia on Economic Affairs, who was presented with a traditional Kazakh shapan as a gesture of respect and friendship. The charity initiative of the evening was dedicated to supporting children under the care of the Children's Hospital in Šentvid pri Stični.
The events made a valuable contribution to the development of cultural and humanitarian cooperation between Kazakhstan and Slovenia, promoting greater awareness of the culture and traditions of the Great Steppe and further strengthening the friendly ties between the two countries.
