Ljubljana, 26 August 2026 — Ambassador of Kazakhstan to Slovenia Altay Abibullayev held a meeting with H.E. Mr Tone Kajzer, Minister of Foreign and European Affairs of the Republic of Slovenia, to discuss a broad range of bilateral political, trade and economic, energy, and inter-parliamentary matters, as well as current international issues of mutual interest.

Ambassador Abibullayev briefed Minister Kajzer on the principal provisions of Kazakhstan’s new Constitution, which entered into force on 1 July 2026, and on the outcome of the parliamentary elections held in Kazakhstan on 23 August. The two sides reached a shared understanding on the importance of establishing inter-parliamentary cooperation between Kazakhstan’s new unicameral Parliament, the Kurultai, and the National Assembly of Slovenia, including through the creation of an inter-parliamentary friendship group.

Minister Kajzer reaffirmed that Kazakhstan remains an important partner for Slovenia in Central Asia. He noted that the new Slovenian Government intends to devote increased attention to strengthening trade and economic cooperation with Kazakhstan. In the context of the forthcoming 35th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations, both sides expressed interest in the opening of a fully-fledged Embassy of Slovenia in Astana in the near future. Such a step would represent a logical and mutually reinforcing political development following the establishment of Kazakhstan’s Embassy in Ljubljana, and would further advance comprehensive political and economic cooperation between the two friendly countries.

Noting with satisfaction the positive dynamics of bilateral trade, which exceeded USD 220 million in 2025, Minister Kajzer underlined that Slovenia’s proactive economic diplomacy will deploy all available instruments to promote economic and investment ties. The sides also discussed the holding in Ljubljana of the next meeting of the Kazakhstan–Slovenia Intergovernmental Commission on Trade and Economic Cooperation.

Particular attention was devoted to cooperation in pharmaceuticals and high technologies. In this regard, a Slovenian official delegation and leading Slovenian IT companies were invited to participate in the AI & Digital Bridge Forum, to be held in Astana on 1–3 October 2026.

The parties also exchanged views on the agenda of the forthcoming meeting of the Foreign Ministers on the margins of the UN General Assembly in New York in September, Kazakhstan’s initiative to establish an International Water Organization, and the current situation surrounding the Caspian Pipeline Consortium. Minister Kajzer highlighted Kazakhstan’s fundamental role in European energy security and expressed Slovenia’s readiness to support continued dialogue within the EU Foreign Affairs Council.

At the conclusion of the meeting, the two sides reaffirmed their commitment to the principles of international law, discussed mutual initiatives and support within international organizations, and agreed to maintain close working coordination across the full spectrum of bilateral relations.
