Budapest, 27 August 2026 – The Embassy of the Republic of Kazakhstan in Hungary, together with Kazakh students studying in Hungary, held a commemorative run dedicated to the International Day against Nuclear Tests, observed annually on 29 August.

The event took place on Margaret Island, one of the most scenic locations in the heart of Budapest. Participants completed a symbolic distance of 8.29 km, reflecting the date of 29 August.

The initiative aimed to raise awareness of the dangers of nuclear weapons, the grave humanitarian and environmental consequences of nuclear testing, and the importance of achieving a safer future free from nuclear tests.

For Kazakhstan, 29 August carries profound historical significance. On this day in 1991, the Semipalatinsk Nuclear Test Site was officially closed. A total of 456 nuclear tests were conducted at the site, leaving a lasting impact on public health, local communities and the environment.

At Kazakhstan’s initiative, on 2 December 2009, the United Nations General Assembly adopted Resolution 64/35, proclaiming 29 August as the International Day against Nuclear Tests. This decision became an important milestone in Kazakhstan’s consistent efforts to advance nuclear disarmament, non-proliferation and the vision of a world free from nuclear weapons.

The symbolic run in Budapest served as a reminder of the importance of preserving historical memory, strengthening international solidarity and promoting a culture of peace.

The Embassy of Kazakhstan in Hungary plans to continue organizing sports initiatives aimed at promoting a healthy lifestyle, strengthening team spirit and bringing together the Kazakh community in Hungary.
