From 1949 to 1989, 456 nuclear tests were conducted at the Semipalatinsk Nuclear Test Site. The consequences of these explosions were not limited to the Semipalatinsk region, having a significant impact on the environment and public health. According to official data, more than 1.5 million people suffered from the consequences of nuclear testing.

On August 29, 1991, the Semipalatinsk Nuclear Test Site was closed by Decree of the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan. To mark the 35th anniversary of this historic event, as well as the International Day against Nuclear Tests observed on August 29, a commemorative event was held in Karmakshy District.

The event, held at the “Youth Park” on the instruction of the district Akim, was attended by Deputy Akim of the district Samat Smagulov, who paid special tribute to citizens who had fulfilled their military service at the Semipalatinsk Nuclear Test Site.

“During that difficult period, more than 100 residents of our district served their military duty at the Semipalatinsk Nuclear Test Site. Despite the risks to their health and lives, they faithfully fulfilled their duty to their Motherland. Today, their courage and civic responsibility remain an example for the younger generation,” said Samat Kydyrbekuly.

During the event, participants laid flowers at the monument and paid tribute to the citizens who had served their country.

In addition, Chairman of the District Council of Veterans Askar Merekov and Chairman of the “Nevada–Semey” Public Association Bolat Sagymbayev delivered speeches, highlighting the consequences of nuclear testing and its historical significance.

Following the event, a ceremony was held to honor citizens who had completed their military service at the Semipalatinsk Nuclear Test Site. A number of veterans were presented with Certificates of Appreciation from the district Akim.

Today, Kazakhstan continues to support the idea of creating a world free of nuclear weapons and pursues initiatives aimed at strengthening global peace and security.
