Kazakhstan will receive 11 billion cubic meters of water by April. The Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation of the Republic of Kazakhstan Nurzhan Nurzhigitov agreed on this.
The 88th meeting of the Interstate Water Management Coordination Commission (ICWC) of Central Asia was held in Dushanbe. The meeting was attended by the heads of water management departments of Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan and Turkmenistan.
The parties considered the progress of the inter-vegetation period in the basins of the Syrdarya and Amu Darya rivers.
It should be noted that the agreed volume of water will flow through the Syrdarya River to the Shardara reservoir in the Turkestan region. Of this, 1.6 billion cubic meters of water will be discharged into the Aral Sea.
“This will allow us to collect the volume of water required for the irrigation period this year, as well as to implement measures to preserve the ecosystem in the southern regions of Kazakhstan. I note that the situation in the south of our country is different from the west and north. There have been no large-scale floods here. And in the summer, the demand for irrigation water is very high. That is why we are carrying out completely different work on providing water to the south. Water diplomacy is an important direction of our ministry's work. As a result of these negotiations, last year we achieved a stable water supply for the south of the country. We will resolve all issues related to water distribution and protection of transboundary water bodies together with our colleagues in the countries of Central Asia," said Nurzhan Nurzhigitov, Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation.
