Helen Clark in Kazakhstan: strengthening transparency in the extractive sector

Helen Clark, Chairman of the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI), visited Kazakhstan to discuss how the EITI standard can help achieve national priorities in natural resource management.
On the eve of the meeting with the Head of State, Helen Clark held talks with the Minister of Industry and Construction of the Republic of Kazakhstan Kanat Sharlapayev. The discussion was attended by deputies of the Mazhilis, representatives of the Ministries of Energy and Finance, as well as civil society, the Association of Mining and Metallurgical Enterprises (AGMP) and Kazenergy.
MPs Sergey Ponomarev and Yerlan Barlybayev stressed the importance of transparency and accountability in the management of natural resources, expressing support for the EITI initiative.
The meeting participants discussed the results of Kazakhstan's validation, plans for the preparation of the EITI National Report for 2022, and further steps in cooperation. The implementation of EITI standards opens up new opportunities to increase trust in the governance of the extractive sector and enhance data transparency.
Helen Clark's visit highlights the importance of a transparent and responsible approach to natural resource management that meets both national and international standards.
