Kazakhstani cities on the way to carbon neutrality: experience and prospects

Within the framework of the 29th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29), the QAZAQSTAN pavilion hosted the event "Support for Kazakhstani cities on the path to carbon neutrality".
The event was organized by the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources of the Republic of Kazakhstan in conjunction with the Global Agreement of Mayors on Climate and Energy (GCoM).
In his welcoming speech, Vice Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources of the Republic of Kazakhstan Mansur Oshurbayev stressed the importance of achieving carbon neutrality by 2060 and noted the leading role of cities in this process.
During the event, Kazakhstan's ambitious goals to achieve carbon neutrality by 2060 were presented and ways to implement them at the city level were discussed.
The participants of the event, including representatives of government agencies, international organizations and cities of Kazakhstan, exchanged experiences and best practices in the field of sustainable urban development.
Special attention was paid to the role of cities in achieving national goals to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and adapt to climate change.
The event also provided information on the opportunities provided by GCoM and other international initiatives to support cities in their efforts to combat climate change.
Highlights of the event:
* Kazakhstan has presented its national strategy to achieve carbon neutrality by 2060 and an updated national strategy, as well as the potential role of cities.
* GCoM presented its CHAMP initiative aimed at supporting cities in developing and implementing climate goals.
* The participants discussed the challenges faced by cities in the process of achieving carbon neutrality and ways to overcome them.
* Examples of successful projects on sustainable urban development in Kazakhstan and other countries were presented.
The event became an important platform for dialogue and exchange of experience between representatives of various sectors interested in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.
