On November 22 this year, with the participation of representatives of the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources of the Republic of Kazakhstan, a coordination meeting was held in Shchuchinsk on the basis of the Kazakh Scientific Research Institute of Forestry and Agroforestry named after A.N. Bukeikhan LLP to review the results of research work within the framework of the scientific and technical program on program-targeted financing on the topic "Scientific and technological support of forestry in Kazakhstan for the purpose of rational use and effective conservation of forest resources" (IRN BR23590517).
1. During the meeting, the main results of the following activities were heard:
- cultivation of planting material and creation of phytomeliorative plantations on the drained bottom of the Aral Sea by sowing salt-resistant (halophytic) shrubs and semi-shrubs;
- determination of effective methods and timing of planting of planting material with a closed root system of Scots pine in the regions of Kazakhstan (north, east);
- development of technological schemes for the use of promising herbicides in forest nurseries and forest crops of the main forest-forming species in the regions of Kazakhstan (north, east);
- identification of the adaptability potential of new ornamental shrubs and their ability to vegetative reproduction in the conditions of Northern Kazakhstan;
- preservation of the gene pool of forest species in Kazakhstan.
It was recommended to approve the main results of these activities and, in general, the scientific and technical program for 2024.
2. Also during the trip, we visited the greenhouse complex of Kazakh Scientific Research Institute of Forestry and Agroforestry named after A.N. Bukeikhan LLP, built using modern technologies and equipped with a climate control system, which allows us to create optimal conditions for growing seedlings at all stages of their development.
This project is being implemented with the support of the Science Foundation in order to obtain varietal and selection-improved planting material of Scots pine with a closed root system, which will be in demand for the needs of landscaping and reforestation.
The project is of strategic importance for the forestry and ecosystem of Kazakhstan. Reforestation contributes to reducing the carbon footprint, protecting soils and preserving biodiversity by supporting the objectives set out in the Presidential Address. In the future, it is planned to expand the range of cultivated tree species, which will make an even greater contribution to the development of the country's forestry.
3. In addition, we visited the RSE "Republican Forest Breeding and Seed Center" in Burabai village, where a presentation of the Genetic Bank of tree and shrub species, as well as the work of the departments of the forest pathology service and forest breeding and seed production was held.
