On July 30, 2025, a particularly important environmental and infrastructure event took place in Shymkent - the Akzhar reservoir, which had not been repaired for more than a century, underwent a complete reconstruction. By order of the city akim, funds were allocated from the budget for engineering and construction work on the reservoir this year, and a contractor was identified through a public procurement competition. On the occasion of the completion of the repair work, the city akim Gabit Syzdykbekov toured the facility and checked its quality.

Akzhar reservoir is a strategic facility for the city and its surrounding settlements. In 2023, the Karasu Canal was partially repaired and its water carrying capacity increased, but full environmental and safety measures were not taken into account. In 2024, planned preventive maintenance was carried out on small reservoirs, but it yielded only partial results. And this year's reconstruction of the Akzhar reservoir is the largest project in the direction of restoring water facilities .

The renovation of the reservoir will have a direct positive impact on the city's ecosystem . First, water supply to green areas and fields will be established on a stable basis. This will help preserve the "green belt" in the city, reduce dust and allergens. Second, efficient water use will allow preserving local biodiversity: the reservoir and its surroundings are a habitat for birds and small animals.
