Selangor – Kazakhstan: New Opportunities for Regional Partnership
27.08.2025 10:30:07 130During the official visit to Kazakhstan, the delegation of the state of Selangor led by Chief Minister Amirudin bin Shari held a series of high-level meetings focused on expanding cooperation in education, culture, technology, and economy.
In Astana, the delegation visited Nazarbayev University to explore academic exchange, joint research, and dual-degree opportunities. Leading institutions from Selangor – UNISEL, UIS, and STDC – expressed strong interest in partnership in fields such as engineering, biotechnology, public administration, and technical education.
Meetings with representatives of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education and the Ministry of Education of Kazakhstan covered joint initiatives in STEM disciplines, innovation, and educational technologies.
Cultural cooperation was another key focus. Agreements were signed with Kazakhstan’s National and State Libraries in Almaty, as well as a letter of intent with the Presidential Center. Future plans include translation of works by prominent Kazakh thinkers such as Al-Farabi and Khoja Ahmed Yasawi into Malay, digital library projects, and children's reading programs.
The delegation also visited Astana Hub, Central Asia’s largest tech hub, where discussions were held on digital economy, startup support, and IT talent development.
In Almaty, the Chief Minister of Selangor met with Mayor Darkhan Satybaldy. The two sides discussed cooperation in urban sustainability, transport, investment, renewable energy, tourism, and education. The direct flight between Kuala Lumpur and Almaty (five times a week) has significantly boosted tourism, with Malaysian tourist arrivals increasing over fivefold in 2024.
This visit marked an important step in strengthening interregional ties between Malaysia and Kazakhstan. The agreements reached open up new avenues for collaboration in education, science, culture, and technology.
