New compulsory medical insurance requirements for tourists entering Georgia

In accordance with the Georgian Law on Tourism, all tourists entering Georgia are required to have a valid medical insurance policy covering accidents. In this regard, the Georgian Government is expected to adopt a corresponding resolution ‘On the approval of the rules and conditions of compulsory medical insurance against accidents for tourists entering Georgia’.
Starting from 1 January 2026, any tourist entering the territory of Georgia must have a valid medical insurance policy against accidents. The insurance policy must be presented in paper or electronic form and must be written in Georgian or English.
The insurance policy may be issued by either a Georgian or foreign insurance company, and the amount of insurance coverage must be at least 30,000 GEL.
The insurance policy must contain the following mandatory information:
- Parties to the insurance contract;
- Territory of insurance;
- Subject of insurance;
- Start and end dates of insurance coverage;
- Insurance risks;
- Amount of insurance compensation;
- Amount of insurance premium;
- Place and terms of payment.
Please note that the insurance policy must cover the entire period of the tourist's stay in Georgia, including the dates of arrival and departure.
Note: According to the Georgian Law on Tourism, a tourist is defined as a person travelling for business, leisure or other personal purposes, staying at least one night and for a period not exceeding one year, except for work in an institution located in the country of destination.
