The city of Kurchatov's designation as a science town is being implemented in stages. Three science-intensive regions are planned to be established across the country, including Kurchatov. This was announced by the city's mayor, Bolat Abdiraliev, at a briefing held at the Regional Communications Service.

The city has established the necessary social and engineering infrastructure, and available land plots have been preserved to allow for territorial expansion. The Agency of the Republic of Kazakhstan for Atomic Energy has developed a draft concept for the development of a science town in Kurchatov for 2026–2035.

"Procedures for designating science town status are scheduled to be completed in December 2026. If granted, the city will receive a new impetus for social, economic, and demographic development, and will also become an attractive hub for attracting international scientific projects and investment," the speaker noted.

The project includes support for high-tech manufacturing, the development of priority scientific and technical areas, the promotion of innovation, the strengthening of scientific and educational infrastructure, and the improvement of mechanisms for the commercialization of scientific developments and the attraction of investment.
