Kazakhstan and the Province of Limburg Discuss Expanding Cooperation in Industry, Energy and Innovation

Sint-Truiden – Hasselt – Genk, 27 March 2026 – During a working visit to the Province of Limburg, Kazakhstan Ambassador to Belgium Roman Vassilenko held a series of meetings with representatives of the regional business community, the leadership of the Flemish Chamber of Commerce and Industry (VOKA, Limburg branch), and visited the EnergyVille research center.
During the visit, meetings were held with executives of leading Belgian companies in the field of unmanned aerial systems, including DronePort, ZSE Technology NV and Citymesh Safety Drone. The parties discussed prospects for cooperation in drone manufacturing, counter-UAS technologies and the deployment of solutions for public safety.
The Ambassador noted that Kazakhstan is actively developing its UAV ecosystem, including applications in agriculture, infrastructure monitoring and emergency response. In this context, particular interest was expressed in the Belgian experience in developing integrated solutions, including counter-drone systems and automated platforms for emergency services.
Special attention was paid to localization of production and technology transfer. The parties discussed opportunities for implementing joint projects, establishing assembly facilities in Kazakhstan, as well as training specialists and exchanging expertise.
In Hasselt, a meeting was held with Johann Leten, Managing Director of VOKA – Flemish Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Limburg branch), during which prospects for expanding trade and economic cooperation were discussed.
The parties emphasized the steady growth of bilateral trade and investment, as well as the complementarity of the economies of Kazakhstan and Flanders. Kazakhstan expressed interest in attracting Flemish companies to implement investment projects in petrochemicals, agro-industry, logistics and processing sectors.
The Ambassador confirmed Kazakhstan’s readiness to provide a pipeline of investment projects structured with the participation of leading international consulting firms, and to offer comprehensive support to Belgian investors.
As part of the visit, the Ambassador also visited the EnergyVille research center in Genk, one of Europe’s leading centers in sustainable energy and energy transition.
During the meeting with the center’s leadership, the parties discussed prospects for cooperation in green energy, smart grids, hydrogen technologies and energy efficiency. The Kazakh side presented its energy policy priorities, including achieving carbon neutrality by 2060, developing renewable energy sources and developing energy infrastructure.
It was highlighted that Kazakhstan is implementing large-scale energy modernization projects, including development of clean coal generation, deployment of advanced environmental technologies and the construction of nuclear power plants. The parties expressed interest in developing joint research projects, exchanging expertise and technologies, and launching pilot projects in energy and sustainable development.
Following the visit, the parties confirmed their mutual interest in strengthening interregional cooperation and agreed to continue a practical dialogue focused on implementing concrete investment and technological projects.
Reference: The Province of Limburg is one of the dynamically developing regions of Flanders with a diversified economy focused on industry, logistics and innovation. Its GDP in 2024 is estimated at around €32 billion (approximately 6% of Belgium’s GDP). The region hosts a strong innovation ecosystem, including EnergyVille, and plays an important role in European industrial and logistics value chains.
