Kazakhstan’s Initiative to Establish an International Water Organization Discussed in Athens

Athens, 29 June 2026 – Ambassador of Kazakhstan to Greece Timur Sultangozhin held a meeting with Mr. Vangelis Constantianos, Executive Secretary of «Global Water Partnership Mediterranean».

During the meeting, the parties discussed the issues of water security, sustainable water resources management, climate resilience, as well as prospects for developing cooperation between Kazakhstan, Greece and the countries of the Mediterranean region in the water sector.

Special attention was paid to Kazakhstan’s initiative to establish an International Water Organization under the auspices of the United Nations, announced during the Regional Conference on Sustainable Development held in Astana in April 2026.

The Ambassador noted that this initiative is aimed at consolidating existing international water programmes, reducing fragmentation in global water governance, strengthening coordination among states, international organizations and the expert community, as well as enhancing the role of water security on the international agenda, taking into account the challenges of climate change, food and energy security.

The parties emphasized the importance of exchanging experience with Greece and the Mediterranean countries, which possess significant expertise in integrated water resources management, drought adaptation, sustainable water use in agriculture and regional water cooperation.

The meeting also included an exchange of views on opportunities to promote Kazakhstan’s initiative within the expert community of Greece, and practical steps were outlined to further develop cooperation in the field of water security and sustainable water resources management.
