Kazakhstan and Thailand Strengthen Dialogue on Democratic and Electoral Institutions

Bangkok, 14 August 2026 Ambassador of the Republic of Kazakhstan to the Kingdom of Thailand Mr. Margulan Baimukhan held a meeting with Sittichote Intaravises, Member of the Election Commission of Thailand.

During the meeting, the Ambassador briefed the Thai side on the key directions of Kazakhstan’s constitutional and political modernization, including the transition from a bicameral Parliament to a unicameral Kurultai, aimed at streamlining the legislative process and enhancing the efficiency of public administration.

Particular attention was paid to the upcoming elections of deputies to the Kurultai of the Republic of Kazakhstan, scheduled for 23 August 2026. Under the new Constitution, the Kurultai consists of 145 deputies, elected for a five-year term through party lists within a single nationwide electoral district. Seven political parties are participating in the elections.

The Ambassador also outlined the key features of Kazakhstan’s electoral system. With a population of approximately 20.6 million, Kazakhstan has around 12.6 million registered voters. Particular attention was given to the use of the Sailau information system, which facilitates the updating of voter lists and enables citizens to verify their voter registration details.

The Ambassador also briefed the Thai side on Kazakhstan’s key socio-economic indicators. Since independence, the country has attracted approximately US$470 billion in foreign direct investment. In 2025, Kazakhstan’s economy grew by 6.5%, with GDP reaching US$305 billion and GDP per capita exceeding US$15,000. The unemployment rate stood at 4.6%.

The development of Kazakhstan–Thailand relations was also highlighted. Bilateral trade reached US$255.1 million in 2025, representing an increase of approximately 8%. Around 200,000 Kazakhstani citizens visited Thailand in 2025. Air connectivity between the two countries currently includes 23 regular direct flights per week, rising to up to 35 flights per week, including charter services.

In turn, Mr. Sittichote Intaravises briefed the Kazakh side on the specific features of Thailand’s electoral system and shared his views on the prospects for mutually beneficial cooperation and exchange of experience between the electoral commissions of the two countries.

The sides expressed their interest in continuing professional dialogue, exchanging practical experience and further developing cooperation in the areas of electoral processes, political modernization and public administration.
