The solemn event was attended by Akim of the region Dastan Ryspekov, chairman of the regional maslikhat Bauyrzhan Shingisov, law enforcement officers, public figures and participants in the December events. A minute of silence was observed in memory of the victims.
"Independence is the fruit of the centuries—old dream and struggle of our ancestors, the pinnacle of our national spirit. 33 years ago, in 1991, the hopes of our people were fulfilled, and Kazakhstan was given the opportunity to decide its own fate. This historic choice is our nation's greatest achievement. Ulytau is the spiritual cradle of our great ancestors, the sacred place from which the Kazakh statehood began. In such a sacred place, we should especially value our independence and every moment of it," said the head of the region, Dastan Ryspekov, in his speech.
At the end of the event, the participants laid flowers at the monument "Tauelsizdik" and took a memorable photo.
