Kazakhstan Participates in the Launch of a Project to Promote Geographical Indications in Central Asia 11.04.2025
On April 7–8, 2025, Almaty hosted the launch meeting of the project “Support for the Development of Geographical Indications in Central Asia – Promotion of Previously Identified GIs”, organized by the non-profit organization Hilfswerk International in cooperation with the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO).The Ministry of Justice of the Republic of Kazakhstan was represented at the event by Ms. Marina Sirotina, Deputy Chairperson of the Committee of Intellectual Property Rights. The geographical indication chosen from Kazakhstan is “Almaty Aport” — a renowned apple variety widely recognized beyond the country’s borders and an integral part of the city’s cultural heritage.Note: Geographical indications (GIs) are used to designate products that are closely linked to a specific geographical area — its natural conditions, history and culture. Legal protection of such indications helps distinguish products with unique qualities, supports the creation of local brands, attracts investment and promotes tourism. This is particularly relevant for agricultural and artisanal goods, whose authenticity enhances their value and market appeal. The meeting also brought together participants from the Kyrgyz Republic and the Republic of Tajikistan. Under the project, Kyrgyzstan is promoting “At-Bashy White Honey,” while Tajikistan is showcasing “Ashtak” (dried apricot). These products, along with the Almaty Aport, possess distinctive features that reflect the richness and diversity of the region.Kazakhstan’s cooperation with WIPO plays a vital role in the development of the national intellectual property protection system. Participation in international GI initiatives provides local producers with the opportunity to gain visibility abroad, expand their export potential and strengthen the competitiveness of domestic products.Source : https://www.gov.kz/memleket/entities/adilet/press/news/details/972110?lang=kk
