Karcag, 27 June 2026 – The traditional Karcag Sheep Stew Cooking Festival was held in the city of Karcag, known as the “capital” of the Hungarian Cumans. The Embassy of the Republic of Kazakhstan in Hungary attended the event as an honorary guest.

Ambassador Abzal Saparbekuly met with Mr. Szepesi Tibor, Mayor of Karcag, Mr. F. Kovács Sándor, Member of the National Assembly of Hungary and President of the Hungarian Cuman Association, and Dr. Fazekas Gábor Gyula, President of the Jász-Nagykun-Szolnok County Assembly.

During the meetings, the parties highlighted the importance of Kazakh-Hungarian cultural ties, including people-to-people diplomacy, as well as the deep historical and fraternal bonds between Kazakhstan and Hungary, particularly between the Kazakh people and the Cumans living in this region. The parties expressed their readiness to further strengthen and develop these traditional ties.

The festival is one of the distinctive gastronomic events of Hungary’s Alföld region. Since 2009, the tradition of preparing Kunság sheep stew in the Karcag style has been included in Hungary’s National Inventory of Intangible Cultural Heritage.

The Sheep Stew Cooking Festival is being held for the 27th time. For many years, the Embassy of the Republic of Kazakhstan has taken part in the festival as an honorary guest and has traditionally presented a special prize of the Embassy to the festival winners.
