"In the future, Kazakhstan should become an important transport hub of the Eurasian continent. For this, it is necessary to continue developing railway infrastructure and modernizing domestic machine-building industries"
Kasym-Jomart Tokayev, President of the Republic of Kazakhstan
2024 was a record year for Kazakhstan's railway engineering plants in terms of production volumes: 124 locomotives, 2,562 freight cars and freight wagons. The growth in production made it possible to modernize rolling stock and reduce dependence on imports.
Every year, millions of passengers travel around the country,
railway engineering enterprises create jobs, develop regions and increase the economic potential of Kazakhstan.
The length of the country's railways is 21 thousand kilometers, along which more than 21 million passengers were transported. In 10 years, about 600 vehicles have been modernized in Kazakhstan. In 2024, 143 new cars, including domestically produced ones, were put into operation on the routes "Kyzylorda-Semey", "Astana-Kokshetau", "Pavlodar-Almaty", "Pavlodar-Turkestan", "Zhezkazgan-Almaty-Atyrau" and "Atyrau", which will allow to improve the quality of transportation. In 2025, another 226 cars are expected to arrive, which will reduce the wear and tear of the fleet from 44 to 38% and create comfortable conditions for passengers.
The new cars are equipped with modern climate control systems, improved sound insulation and comfortable sleeping places, which will allow them to travel more comfortably over long distances not only with better transport service, but also with the development of the transport structure.
Employment through the creation of jobs. 60 domestic enterprises operate in the industry, employing about 8 thousand people. In 2024, new production facilities were opened in the cities of Astana, Kostanay and Ekibastuz, providing 215 jobs.
In the next two years, 12 investment projects will be implemented in Kazakhstan, which will create 3,000 new jobs. The average salary of workers in the industry is already 440 thousand tenge, and the demand for specialists is growing. The industry needs about 3,500 new personnel. Training of specialists required for the industry is being carried out in 39 higher educational institutions and 39 colleges.
In 2024, 23.2 billion tenge was invested in railway construction. The volume of rolling stock production increased 5 times, which allowed launching new factories and reducing dependence on imports.
In 2025, freight cars will be produced in the Atyrau region. The plant's design capacity is 6,000 units per year. 20 billion tenge of investment will be attracted and 180 jobs will be created.
This year, a locomotive servicing plant with a design capacity of 50 units per year will be launched in Zhambyl region.
The production of platform wagons and passenger cars will begin in the North Kazakhstan region, as well as the second stage of production for annual product transportation.
In 2025, the production of wheel sets and locomotive support beams will begin in Atyrau, Karaganda region.
By 2028, a new generation of freight electric locomotives will appear in Kazakhstan, the production of which will be 40% cheaper and 20% more efficient than existing models24. Currently, 1,100 kilometers of new roads are being built, including Dostyk-Moyintsy, which will increase the throughput of this section by 5 times and improve international transit. The Almaty bypass railway will reduce the load on the railway network of the region, and Darbaza-Maktaaral will create a new transport link in the southern regions.
In addition, it is planned to build a railway between the Kyzylzhar and Moyintsy stations, which will increase the mobility of the population and simplify the production of transport logistics in Kazakhstan by 100%, which will reduce dependence on external supplies. The opening of new enterprises will allow us to produce more cars, locomotives and components domestically, which will make railway transport reliable and affordable.
Kanat Sharlapayev, Minister of Industry and Construction of the Republic of Kazakhstan:
“The railway industry of Kazakhstan is breaking records. 124 locomotives, 2,565 freight cars and 122 passenger cars at the end of last year are not just numbers, but economic growth, new jobs and a powerful industry in Kazakhstan, including our independence. Today, we are not limited to producing record-breaking cars and locomotives, we are building the future of domestic industry. "
All these measures are aimed at improving the quality of life of Kazakhstanis: new trains will provide comfortable transportation, new factories will provide jobs for residents of the regions, and infrastructure modernization will open up more opportunities for travel and business.
