Tears, Amnesty, and Photos of Granddaughters: How a 49-Year-Old Woman from Kazakhstan's EKR Got a Second Chance 14.08.2025
Tears, Amnesty, and Photos of Granddaughters: How a 49-Year-Old Woman from Kazakhstan's EKR Got a Second ChanceHer life was split into "before" and "after" by a single thoughtless act. But today, a 49-year-old Kazakhstani woman, who was serving time for fraud, has turned that page. She became the first woman in the East Kazakhstan region to be released under amnesty. Her cherished dream came true right in the courtroom. Thanks to the amnesty, she will return home five months earlier than planned. In the minimum-security prison, where she served her sentence and worked in the household block, her days were filled with laundry and ironing. But every evening, she performed the same ritual: before bed, she would pull out a few worn photographs. They were of her granddaughters. The woman would kiss their faces, dreaming of the day she could braid their hair, take them to school, and simply be with them. According to her, these photos were her talisman and her only hope. The path to freedom was paved not only by her remorse but also by the hard work of the prison staff. The head of her unit personally oversaw the collection of all the necessary documents for the amnesty, bringing her one step closer to her goal. Thanks to this meticulous and systematic work, Aizhan (name changed) was given her second chance. When the judge announced the decision, her emotions overflowed. Through her tears, she managed to say:"Finally, my dream will come true—I'll see my children and granddaughters! I want to be with them. I will never repeat such mistakes. The law is the law, and I have served my punishment. Today, I'll buy a ticket to Astana, to go home."On that day, she addressed all Kazakhstanis with a heartfelt warning:"Don't make reckless decisions. It's not worth it."This story is not just news about a release. It's a story of faith, hope, and how, even behind bars, you can find the strength to start all over again. Source : https://www.gov.kz/memleket/entities/duis-vko/press/news/details/1050983?lang=kk

Taza Qala — a new step for Shymkent youth in forming an ecological culture 11.08.2025
A manifestation of the love and caring civic attitude of the young generation of Shymkent for their city. This initiative is not a one-time Sabbath, but a public appeal to form an ecological culture by cleaning the city every Saturday. The city's youth and activists have incorporated these actions into their life principles, making cleanliness a common goal and responsibility the main task. Every Sabbath in Shymkent is a clear sign that does not detract from the beauty of the city. Participants not only clean the streets, parks, and ditches, but also tidy up the area around garbage cans and windbreaks, and help create a safe and comfortable environment for city residents to relax in residential areas. The special feature is that the action is held on a voluntary basis. The city's youth come to the Sabbath at their own pace, participate with special equipment, and with a social intention to address topics of environmental importance. Not only that, but they are respected and supported by the akimat, schools, universities, and public organizations, both materially and organizationally. Looking back at past experiences, the “Clean Kazakhstan” initiative has also been actively implemented in other large cities of Kazakhstan. For example, in 2025, cleanups were held simultaneously in five districts of Shymkent: cleaning the courtyards of apartment buildings, pedestrian paths, ditches, and public places - everything was aimed at developing an ecological culture. This is different from before - the ability of public relations to self-organize, and activity in the field of ecology has increased. In addition, on September 16, 2023, through the “World Clean Up Day” campaign, young activists from Shymkent took part in cleaning the territory of the historical town of Sairam. They beautified sacred places and promoted care for the environment. This is evidence that young people were able to connect ecological culture with historical heritage. If in previous years, the clean-up campaigns were mostly based on material work, today's youth strive to raise awareness of ecology at the level of consciousness. They understand the importance of the campaign aimed at protecting not only public places, but also the culture of the city as a whole: they call for proper waste management, sorting, and compassion for nature. Compared to the past, both the volume and effectiveness of modern clean-up campaigns are increasing. For example, in 2025, hundreds of people and about ten pieces of equipment were mobilized in several districts of Shymkent as part of the Clean Kazakhstan campaign, and dozens of tons of garbage were removed. This shows that the quality and results of the work done in this area go hand in hand. And the main focus of the Taza Qala campaign was on the formation of an ecological culture and the formation of an active civic position of young people. They feel their responsibility for the city at this pace. In the eyes of the young people gathered at the clean-up campaign, there is a clean city, clean intentions, and clean actions. For Taza Qala, the city is their favorite environment, and society is their common home. Everyone who supports their initiative and participates in the clean-up is a keeper of Shymkent's appearance and nature. It is no wonder that this initiative has now spread to other districts and become a nationwide movement. Clean-up is not just about cleanliness, it is a civic initiative, a manifestation of the true love and responsibility of young people for their city. Compared to various previous events, Taza Qala is not just a place to be preserved, it is about cleanliness, culture and respect that grow in the hearts of every person. Thanks to such real projects, Shymkent will truly become Taza Qala - a Clean City.
"Taza Qala": Shymkent youth creates a culture of cleanliness 11.08.2025
The environmental campaign "Taza Qala" continues in Shymkent. It has become not just a way for city youth to spend a day off, but a real habit of caring for their hometown. Every Saturday, activists go out to the streets, courtyards and parks to clean up, clear the area of garbage and remind city residents that cleanliness is the result of common efforts. This initiative started as a voluntary movement, but quickly gained broad support. Students, schoolchildren, representatives of public organizations and simply concerned residents unite to make the city cleaner and more comfortable. There is no formal coercion here - participants come at the call of their hearts, arm themselves with gloves, garbage bags and simply do what they think is right. Every Saturday event turns into a small celebration of communication and teamwork. In addition to cleaning, the guys often share environmental tips, talk about proper waste sorting, and offer ideas for improving urban space. Thanks to such events, people begin to look at familiar places differently - they stop being anonymous dots on the map and become a part of the common home. Special attention in "Taza Qala" is paid to the development of environmental culture. Young people do not limit themselves to one-time actions, but try to form a stable habit of caring for the environment in those around them. For this, not only physical garbage collection is important, but also educational work: reminders about the harm of pollution, calls to throw waste in bins, explanations of how recycling helps the city and nature. If we compare with previous years, we can see that the approach to such actions in Shymkent has changed significantly. Just a few years ago, clean-up days were mostly formal: people went out to clean once or twice a year, often by order, and not on their own initiative. Today, everything is different - the movement has become truly popular. Participants themselves coordinate actions, choose places for cleaning, invite friends and colleagues. The experience of 2023 is indicative, when, as part of World Cleanup Day, activists from Shymkent organized a large-scale cleanup in the Sairam settlement area. At that time, the action was not only ecological, but also cultural in nature: by cleaning the territory of the historical monument, the participants emphasized the importance of careful treatment of cultural heritage. This combination of care for nature and respect for history has become iconic. In 2025, Shymkent hosted another large-scale environmental campaign, covering several districts at once. Hundreds of city residents participated in the cleanup, dozens of units of equipment were used, and the volume of garbage removed was measured in tons. Such events show that a city can quickly change for the better if residents act together. However, "Taza Qala" differs from previous actions precisely in its regularity and focus on young people. This is not a one-time burst of enthusiasm, but constant work to improve the urban environment. Young people perceive participation in senbiliks as part of their civic position, and not just a useful activity. It is important that the event unites people of different ages and spheres of activity. Along with students, you can meet married couples who come with their children, or elderly residents who want to contribute to the cleanliness of the streets. Thus, "Taza Qala" has become not only an ecological but also a social project, promoting communication and strengthening ties between residents. It is worth noting separately that each event takes place in a positive atmosphere. After cleaning, participants often have small tea parties or picnics, discuss what can be improved in the next clean-up. This helps to maintain interest in the project and maintain a friendly spirit. If we compare “Taza Qala” with previous cleaning formats, we can highlight three key differences: - regularity, turning a one-time action into a habit; - focus on youth as the main driving force; - emphasis on education and the formation of environmental responsibility. These factors allow us to hope that the effect of the campaign will be long-term. After all, the cleanliness of the city depends not only on how many bags of garbage were taken out this time, but also on whether people will throw garbage in bins tomorrow, and whether they will stop leaving waste in nature and in yards. Today, Taza Qala is already perceived as an important part of city life. It is a brand behind which stands an informal but very powerful community of people willing to spend their time and energy for the common good. Perhaps in the future, the movement will go beyond Shymkent and unite activists from other cities. In the meantime, every Saturday you can see groups of young people in gloves, with bags and smiles on their faces on the streets. They know: step by step, yard by yard, park by park, they are bringing their city closer to their dream - to that very image of "Taza Qala", clean, well-groomed and loved by all.
A Clean City in the Hands of the Young People: An Environmental Action Was Held in Abay Park 11.08.2025
A large-scale environmental campaign "Birgemiz: Taza Alem" was held in Shymkent, dedicated to the 30th anniversary of the Constitution of the Republic of Kazakhstan. The event took place on the territory of Abay Park, where dozens of volunteers cleaned and improved the area, demonstrating that caring for the cleanliness of their hometown is everyone's responsibility. The organizers noted that the main goal of the campaign is not just to clean up the trash, but to form a sense of environmental responsibility in young people and instill love for their small homeland. Students, schoolchildren and young activists gathered in Abay Park early in the morning. They were armed with garbage bags, gloves and great enthusiasm. The participants cleaned the central alleys, the area around the Abay Kunanbayev monument, and the adjacent territory where household garbage often accumulates. They paid special attention to the lawns and flower beds, where they removed not only paper and plastic, but also weeds that interfere with ornamental plants. After cleaning, the young people installed information signs calling for cleanliness and not to leave garbage in public places. According to the participants, such events not only help to restore order, but also unite people. Many noted that after personally participating in the cleanup, you treat the park with greater respect and think twice before throwing a candy wrapper on the ground. The problem of pollution of public areas remains relevant for many cities in Kazakhstan. In Shymkent, as in other megacities, a large number of park visitors leads to the accumulation of garbage, especially in the warm season. The lack of a waste disposal culture and the shortage of bins in some areas aggravate the situation. The "Birgemiz: Taza Alem" campaign has become part of a broader program to form an environmental culture among the population, which is being implemented with the support of the city akimat and public organizations. Such initiatives are not the first to be held in Shymkent. Back in the early 2000s, city authorities and school groups actively organized clean-up days, attracting not only students, but also workforces of enterprises. However, in those years, such events were more formal in nature, and participation was often mandatory. Today's events are distinguished by their voluntary nature and emphasis on educational work. Young people come not on orders, but at the call of their hearts. This suggests that environmental awareness is gradually becoming a personal priority. In 2019, for example, as part of the nationwide movement "Taza Kazakhstan" in Shymkent, more than 500 tons of garbage were collected in one day. But the main problem was that after a couple of weeks, many of the cleaned areas were polluted again. Now the emphasis is on developing the habit of city residents to maintain cleanliness constantly, and not just on the days of the campaigns. According to environmentalists, such events have a long-term effect, especially if they are carried out systematically. Children and teenagers who participate in cleanups grow up with the understanding that cleanliness is not the responsibility of public utilities, but a shared responsibility. In addition, the campaigns help remind adults that parks and squares are not just green areas, but symbols of the city that require careful treatment. The environmental campaign in Abay Park was one of a series of events held in Shymkent this year in honor of the 30th anniversary of the Constitution. At the same time, clean-up days, greening of courtyards and installation of containers for separate waste collection were held in other areas of the city. Young activists plan to expand the format of "Birgemiz: Taza Alem" and hold such clean-ups monthly, covering different parks and squares. The idea of holding educational master classes on waste sorting and recycling right during the campaigns is also being discussed, so that participants receive not only practical, but also theoretical experience. If such initiatives continue to develop, we can expect a decrease in the volume of household waste and an increase in the level of improvement in Shymkent in the future. Environmental culture is not formed in one day - it is a long process that requires joint efforts of the authorities, public organizations and the residents themselves. The "Birgemiz: Taza Alem" campaign in Abay Park showed that young people are ready to take on the role of leaders in this process. This means that the city has a chance to become truly clean and green if everyone remembers: order begins with yourself.

On August 9, 2025, a special environmental event took place in Shymkent. As part of the republican environmental campaign "Birgemiz: Taza Alem", organized to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the Constitution, a large-scale Saturday was held in Abai Park. Volunteer youth, public activists, representatives of the local akimat and city residents participated in this event, focusing on the common goal of increasing environmental culture and showing compassion for their native city. During the campaign, the park area and the vicinity of the Abai monument were cleaned, garbage and weeds were collected from the flower beds. Participants contributed to improving the environment and creating a comfortable, clean recreation area for residents. This Saturday was not limited to garbage collection, but was aimed at raising the environmental awareness of young people and increasing their love for their homeland. If we recall similar events in previous years, the peculiarity of this campaign is immediately noticeable. For example, in Shymkent in 2024 and 2023, the main task was to collect and remove garbage from various parts of the city. Yes, such cleaning works are important, but they often have a temporary effect and are not enough to deeply form a culture of living in harmony with nature. And the “Birgemiz: Taza Alem” campaign was not limited to physical cleanliness, but aimed to influence the minds of residents. The 2022-2023 Sabbaths were mostly seasonal. After them, within a few weeks, garbage would accumulate on the city streets again, and the situation in green areas would return to the same. It is known that such short-term measures are ineffective. And this 2025 campaign set the goal of laying the foundation for sustainable environmental initiatives. The organizers noted the need not only to hold the Sabbath annually, but also to continue environmental education work in the interim periods. Abai Park is one of the cultural places that is often visited by residents and guests of the city. Cleaning and beautification work here is important not only from an aesthetic point of view, but also from a historical and spiritual point of view. Tidying up the area around the Abai monument is a sign of respect for the great personality. The participation of young people in cleaning and beautifying such facilities increases their civic responsibility. During the weekend, participants discussed ideas for improving the park, not only cleaning, but also installing benches made from environmentally friendly materials, increasing the number of separate trash cans for recyclables, installing a small fountain or sprinklers for refreshing water in the summer, and increasing lighting in the winter. All of these suggestions are aimed at improving the city's ecology and aesthetics. Another important aspect of the campaign is the call for young people to an active civic position. According to the participants, this sabbatical encouraged them not to be indifferent to the fate of their native city and to support any public initiative. The feeling “I am a part of Shymkent” awakened in the hearts of each participant. The basis of this feeling is environmental culture and responsibility. Compared to previous events, the 2025 campaign is distinguished by its high social and educational value. While previous Saturdays were often organized by the akimat or municipal services, this time various groups of society - volunteers, students, and active citizens - came together and jointly implemented the initiative. This is a real example of the unification of public forces. The activity and enthusiasm of the participants showed the true spirit of the campaign. They perceived this event not as just a holiday, but as a symbol of charity and unity for the common good. They proved that environmental charity is not just about collecting garbage, but a systematic activity aimed at leaving a clean and comfortable city for future generations. In general, the "Birgemiz: Taza Alem" campaign has begun a new stage in the environmental movement in Shymkent. This initiative may become an example for other districts and regions in the future. If such regular and targeted events continue, the city will not only become more beautiful, but the attitude of residents towards nature will also radically change. Today's action is a step towards the future. It showed that everyone can contribute to nature conservation and how important this contribution is. The activity and responsibility of Shymkent youth will undoubtedly make a significant contribution to strengthening the ecological culture in the city.
