Geneva, 6 May 2025 – On 5–6 May 2025, the headquarters of the World Trade Organization (WTO) in Geneva hosted a two-day informal retreat on sustainable agriculture. The event was convened at the initiative of the Chair of the General Council and the Director-General of the WTO.The retreat brought together Permanent Representatives of WTO Members, heads of international organizations, and subject-matter experts to discuss the role of the multilateral trading system in advancing sustainable development in the agri-food sector.On the second day of the retreat, the Permanent Representative of Kazakhstan to the WTO, Ambassador Kairat Torebayev, served as facilitator of one of four parallel thematic sessions. The session focused on identifying the drivers and barriers to sustainable agriculture, as well as exploring how the WTO could contribute to supporting a sustainable transition.Key issues addressed included the alignment of trade, agricultural and environmental policies, the flexibility of international rules, mutual recognition of standards, and the importance of technical assistance. Special attention was given to the specific needs of developing countries, landlocked developing countries (LLDCs), and small-scale producers.Permanent Representative of Kazakhstan emphasized the need for a balanced approach. Efforts to promote sustainability must not create additional barriers. He advocated for strengthened coordination within the WTO framework and proposed the development of tools to assess the impact of subsidies on sustainability.The retreat served as a valuable platform for open and substantive exchanges. Representatives of international organizations, including FAO, OECD, UNIDO and UNCTAD, underscored the multidimensional nature of sustainability, encompassing environmental, economic, and social dimensions.Participants raised concerns about the misalignment of standards with the capacities of developing countries, limited access to certification systems, and the high cost of compliance. The discussions highlighted the need to reduce fragmentation, expand access to financing and technology, and strengthen cross-sectoral policy dialogue.Moderators of all thematic sessions presented concise summaries of the discussions. The WTO Director-General and the Chair of the General Council thanked participants for their active engagement and announced that a summary document reflecting the retreat’s key takeaways would be prepared. Trieste, May 8, 2025 – A high-level conference titled “The Middle Corridor: Connecting Europe with Kazakhstan through the Ports of Trieste and Monfalcone” took place in Italy’s major port city of Trieste. The event focused on enhancing transport and logistics cooperation between Kazakhstan and Italy. Participants included Members of the European Parliament, officials from the ports of Trieste and Monfalcone, and executives from leading logistics companies.  Kazakhstan was represented by Ambassador to Italy Yerbolat Sembayev, Chairman of the Committee for Railway and Water Transport of the Ministry of Transport Zhanibek Taizhanov, Deputy Chairman of the Board of the National Company “Aktau International Sea Commercial Port” Ivan Goncharov, as well as representatives from several Kazakh transport and logistics companies.The conference highlighted the growing importance of Kazakhstan as a key partner and central hub in the Trans-Caspian International Transport Route (TITR)—now viewed as a strategic alternative trade corridor between Asia and Europe amid shifting geopolitical conditions.In his remarks, Ambassador Sembayev emphasized that developing international logistics and resilient transport corridors is a strategic priority for Kazakhstan, given its central location in Eurasia. Trieste, May 8, 2025 – As part of the 80th anniversary commemorations of Victory in World War II, the Ambassador of Kazakhstan to Italy, Yerbolat Sembayev, laid flowers at a memorial obelisk dedicated to 36 Kazakh soldiers from the 30th Division of the 9th Corps of the Yugoslav People’s Liberation Army. These soldiers died during the liberation of northern Italy, including the city of Trieste, during World War II.  In his address at the ceremony, Ambassador Sembayev highlighted Kazakhstan’s significant contribution to the defeat of fascism. He noted that many Kazakh citizens voluntarily joined the front lines and gave their lives in the fight for freedom and independence.   “Today, thanks to this memorial in Trieste, we proudly remember those who gave their lives. May the names of the Kazakh heroes who remained on Italian soil be forever honoured. Their sacrifice is part of our shared history in the struggle for peace and friendship. Hundreds of our compatriots have etched their names into the history of the great Victory through their immortal acts of bravery. The names of the 36 Kazakh soldiers who helped liberate Trieste, along with those of other wartime heroes, will remain in our memory forever,” Sembayev said.The obelisk was unveiled on April 25, 2010, and was created by Kazakh sculptor A. Kutanov. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Kazakhstan strongly condemns the unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) attacks carried out on 17 and 19 July 2026 against civilian vessels in the Black Sea engaged in the legitimate commercial transportation of oil through the infrastructure of the Caspian Pipeline Consortium (CPC).We regard such attacks as an unacceptable infringement upon the economic interests of the Republic of Kazakhstan, as well as deliberate acts aimed at destabilising lawful international trade and global energy markets and undermining the security of global transport and logistics supply chains.Of particular concern is the fact that the mechanism previously agreed upon by all parties concerned for exchanging information on civilian vessels entering the waters of the Black Sea to load oil at CPC terminals was deliberately disregarded, thereby endangering the lives and safety of the crews aboard those vessels.Kazakhstan demands an immediate halt to these attacks and the adoption of comprehensive measures to ensure the security of the infrastructure used for the export of Kazakh hydrocarbons.We strongly urge our partner countries to unequivocally condemn these attacks and invite all parties concerned to developing practical measures. We firmly believe that only strict adherence to international law can prevent the recurrence of such incidents.The Republic of Kazakhstan is currently conducting a comprehensive assessment of the damage caused. Warsaw, May 8, 2025  - In honor of the celebration of the 80th anniversary of the Victory in the Great Patriotic War at the Memorial Cemetery-Mausoleum of Soviet Soldiers in Warsaw held a ceremony of laying wreaths at the graves of Kazakh soldiers. The solemn event was attended by employees of the Embassy of Kazakhstan and the Office of the Military Attaché. Diplomats honored the memory of the fallen soldiers with a minute of silence.Reference: The Cemetery-mausoleum of Soviet soldiers on Zwirki and Wigura Street in Warsaw was opened in 1950. On the area of 19.2 hectares are buried 22 thousand Soviet soldiers who died during the liberation of Warsaw, among whom there are Kazakhs. On the Polish land during the Second World War 27 thousand Kazakhs died. This cemetery is the largest burial place of Soviet warriors on the territory of Poland. Vienna, May 7, 2025 – At the OSCE conference “Building Resilience through Inclusion and Empowerment,” Ambassador-at-Large of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Alua Nadirkulova, took part and presented Kazakhstan’s efforts in promoting gender equality and human rights.In her speech, Ambassador Nadirkulova emphasized the irreversibility of democratic reforms implemented in Kazakhstan on the initiative of President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev and their support from international partners, including the OSCE, the European Union and the Council of Europe.Key achievements include the approval in 2023 of the Action Plan on Human Rights and the Rule of Law developed in accordance with UN recommendations, amendments and additions to some legislative acts on women's rights and child safety in 2024, as well as the adoption in March 2025 of the UNGA resolution on the establishment of the UN Regional Center on Sustainable Development Goals for Central Asia and Afghanistan in Almaty. On the eve of Victory Day in the city of Zhanaozen, as part of the state program for the development of housing and communal infrastructure for 2023-2029, apartment keys were given to 10 families on the housing waiting list.
