Kazakhstan Becomes the First CIS Country to Integrate Mobile Data into Tourism Statistics 25.06.2025
Kazakhstan has become the first country in the CIS to incorporate mobile data into official tourism statistics. This groundbreaking initiative is being implemented by the Bureau of National Statistics with the support of the World Bank and aligns with the Head of State’s directives to introduce innovative approaches to data management. The use of mobile positioning data allows for a new level of monitoring tourist flows by capturing real movements of people, including day trips and visits without overnight stays, which were previously not accounted for in traditional statistics. As a result, the statistics become more accurate, cover a greater number of events, and provide an objective picture of tourism activity. Preliminary results of the project, conducted using data from one of the mobile operators for the period from July 2023 to July 2024, have already yielded important insights. It was found that over 60% of domestic trips are single-day visits. The highest tourist traffic was observed during the summer months and holiday periods—especially during Nauryz, New Year, and Victory Day. The record number of overnight stays away from home was registered on March 21, 2024, at the peak of spring holidays. Residents of Astana most frequently traveled to the Akmola region and Almaty, despite the difference in distance. Significant seasonality, with a threefold difference between peak and least active months, opens new opportunities for tourism planning. All these issues were discussed at a thematic seminar and working meeting involving representatives of the World Bank, where preliminary results were presented and next development steps outlined. International experts highly appreciated Kazakhstan’s progress in digitalizing statistics and developing new data sources. Kazakhstan continues close cooperation with the Estonian company Positium—an international partner in developing mobile data analysis algorithms. The World Bank actively supports the project, notably through the involvement of its economist and consultant, Metin Nebiler. “Kazakhstan is setting the standard for digital statistics across the CIS and the region. This project is not just a technical innovation but a genuine breakthrough that changes the approach to measuring tourist flows and expands the horizons of analytics,” notes M. Nebiler. Currently, work is underway to sign agreements with telecom operators, which will allow expanding coverage and transitioning to regular publication of statistics based on mobile positioning not only in tourism but also in the migration sphere. Support for small and medium—sized businesses is a strategic priority 25.06.2025
The Head of State emphasizes that sustainable economic development is impossible without strong small and medium-sized businesses (SMEs). "The higher the share of small and medium—sized businesses, the more developed the economy is," the President emphasizes. That is why Kazakhstan is taking systematic measures to create a favorable business environment. In developed countries, the share of SMEs in the gross domestic product reaches 40-60%.There is also a positive trend in the region. Over the past two years, the number of active entrepreneurs has increased by 7.8% and reached 66,000. The share of SMEs in the regional economy is 30%. Small and medium—sized businesses employ more than 163,000 people, which is 36% of the economically active population. The volume of products produced by SMEs in 2024 amounted to 2.4 trillion tenge with an increase of 9%. The largest contribution to the increase in production volumes was made by Kostanay, Beimbeta Mailina and Fedorovsky districts.Special attention,Attention should be paid to entrepreneurs who are ready to implement new ideas. "If a person shows interest in the implementation of a project, our task is to support and accompany him to a sustainable result," Kumar Aksakalov emphasized. It is important not only to advise, but also to help businesses at every stage — from receiving state support to working with banks and government agencies.Industrial zones, such as the Automotive Components Manufacturing Center and mini—zones based on former factories, remain key growth points. At the same time, the structure of state support is undergoing positive changes: if in 2021 44% of projects were related to trade, today this figure has decreased to 11%. The main focus is on the manufacturing industry, transportation services and the manufacturing sector. The Business-Komek program, implemented in 2023, has already shown good results, allowing, for example, to increase the number of livestock in the south of the country by 7,700 heads.Following the meeting, instructions were given to akimats and relevant structures: to strengthen analytical and awareness-raising work, involve social entrepreneurship, ensure equal access to support measures and monitor the effectiveness of their distribution."Entrepreneurial initiative is becoming the driving force of Kazakhstan's economic growth," the Head of State noted. That is why SMEs should become not just a supported sector, but the core of regional development and social stability.Source : https://www.gov.kz/memleket/entities/kostanay/press/news/details/1019038?lang=kk
