80th Anniversary of the UN Charter: Kazakhstan reaffirms its commitment to the goals and principles of the Organization 25.10.2025
New York, 24 October 2025 – The international community marks the 80th anniversary of the entry into force of the Charter of the United Nations, which laid the foundation of the modern international order and became a symbol of global unity. On this day, the UN Headquarters hosted an open debate of the Security Council on the theme “The United Nations Organization: Looking into the Future”. The meeting served as an important platform to discuss how the Organization can effectively respond to new challenges while maintaining its central role in shaping a more just and sustainable international order. Opening the meeting, UN Secretary-General António Guterres warned that when Member States act in violation of the Charter’s principles, it erodes trust in the entire United Nations system and endangers global security, creating dangerous precedents and deepening the crisis of confidence.Speaking on behalf of Kazakhstan, Permanent Representative to the United Nations Kairat Umarov emphasized that the 80th anniversary of the Charter is not only an occasion to honor its historical legacy but also a clear call to renew the collective responsibility of Member States. He noted that, in a context of eroding trust and the selective application of the Charter’s principles, there is and can be no alternative to its fundamental role, and that its provisions must be fully and faithfully observed.Quoting President of the Republic of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, the Permanent Representative stated: “Above all, a credible UN for the 21st century requires Member States to take concrete steps toward durable peace and security. Otherwise, the UN is doomed to forever mitigate consequences while root causes forever proliferate”.He stressed that restoring trust in the international system requires concrete steps – reforming the Security Council to make it more representative and effective, strengthening the role of developing countries and responsible middle powers, and revitalizing the General Assembly as the most inclusive body that ensures equal participation of all Member States. Kazakhstan attaches particular importance to the Secretary-General’s “UN80” initiative, which is aimed at reforming, renewing, and strengthening the Organization, as well as enhancing its capacity to respond swiftly to contemporary challenges.Speaking on the eve of the Republic of Kazakhstan Day, Kairat Umarov reaffirmed the country’s readiness to continue acting as a responsible middle power and a bridge between different centers of influence, consistently advocating for strengthening the central role of the United Nations and advancing multilateral diplomacy as the only viable mechanism for ensuring peace and stability.Source : https://www.gov.kz/memleket/entities/mfa-kazakhstanun/press/news/details/1093295?lang=kk
