2024: Trade growth and price stabilization in the face of global challenges 07.01.2025
The year 2024 was a time of significant economic growth for Kazakhstan, despite external challenges and an unstable geopolitical situation. This became possible thanks to systematic measures to support the economy, the active development of domestic trade and exports, as well as the improvement of trade infrastructure.Trade growth, measured by the physical volume index (IFO), was 8.2% compared to 2023. The domestic trade turnover increased by 13.4%, reaching 61 trillion tenge, and the country's foreign trade turnover amounted to $116 billion. The growth of e–commerce was particularly impressive - by 5 times to 2.44 trillion tenge (starting in 2022). The share of online commerce in total retail trade was 14% in 2024.One of the priorities was to ensure the stabilization of prices for socially important goods. The measures taken have made it possible to keep their growth at just 1% per year, which is the lowest rate in the last 10 years. This year, for the first time, state support measures were provided to domestic trade entities to stimulate the development of a modern trade infrastructure in the country. This additionally provides domestic producers with up to 50% access to retail shelves.Trade continues to occupy a key place in the country's economy, with the second largest contribution to GDP at 16.2%. In his Message, the Head of State set tasks for the Ministry of Trade and Integration to strengthen economic stability and develop bold approaches in trade policy. Among the significant steps is the adoption of a new law "On Stock Trading", which eliminates the appearance of pocket exchanges and prevents the use of trading platforms to avoid government procurement. This will create a transparent market system controlled by antimonopoly authorities. In addition, an Export Credit Agency was established, operating on a one-stop-shop basis and providing all necessary support measures for non-commodity exports, including insurance and guarantee of export transactions, as well as pre-export and trade financing. The amount of support provided by the Agency in 2024 exceeded 340 billion tenge, and the total economic effect is estimated at 1.7 trillion tenge. The foreign trade infrastructure is actively developing to promote domestic goods on international markets. The partner office in Chengdu, the representative office in Urumqi and the national pavilion center "Jiangsu - Central Asia" in Nanjing have already started their work. Areas have also been provided in the pilot zone of regional trade and economic cooperation "China-SCO" in Shandong Province. A trade pavilion for Kazakh products has opened in Uzbekistan on the territory of the Termez International Trade Center. Kazakhstan has also opened sales offices in the UAE, China, Turkey, India and Iran, where sales agents have been appointed. The Qazaq Trade House operates in Dubai. Thanks to these measures, the volume of non-primary exports of goods and services increased by 10.4% to $32 billion by the end of 2024. The Ministry of Trade and Integration is actively working to identify and limit low-quality and unsafe products. In 2024, more than 600 thousand tons of livestock products were checked, more than 1 thousand transport units were returned, and import bans on nine types of products were imposed, and 25 anti-dumping measures were applied against imports. In September 2024, Kazakhstan presented for the first time a Review of Trade Policy within the framework of the World Trade Organization. The international community highly appreciated Kazakhstan's efforts to diversify its economy, simplify trade procedures and increase transparency, recognizing the country as a reliable and predictable partner. In 2025, the Ministry will focus on implementing a set of measures to whitewash trade, expand modern formats and modernize trading platforms, digitalize and develop e-commerce. These measures will help strengthen the position of domestic trade, ensuring its compliance with international standards.Source : https://www.gov.kz/memleket/entities/mti/press/news/details/912562
